George Magalios Studios and Roberta Semeraro are pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition by George Magalios entitled “Alla Ricerca delle Tre Grazie” at Magazzino Gallery in Venice. The exhibition will take place from 10 December 2025 to 10 January 2026 with an opening reception to be held from on 10 December 2025 from 6 pm to 9 pm.
Who were The Three Graces? By “were” we assume their existence when in fact, they were creations of the poetic Greek mind, the mythical daughters of Zeus and Eurynome, Thalia, Euphrosyne and Aglaia. There is no common historical agreement on their roles and the specifics they played in Greek mythology, apart from being the inspirations for artists and symbols representing splendor (Aglaia), good cheer (Thalia), and joy (Euphrosyne). Sources call them the goddesses of adornment, beauty, joy, festivity, dance and song.
My project, “In Search of the Three Graces” is one such dedication in a series of photographs (both in digital color and in black and white silver gelatin prints) of three women representing the mythical daughters of Zeus. The theme of the Three Graces is my personal act of grace, a form of honoring the various women in my life by recognizing their inner beauty and charm and by casting them as the Three Graces. My photographs are aesthetic attempts to capture these mystical qualities by creating images that integrate the natural movements of the models with my use of the camera as a machine that creates extreme ranges of contrast with over-exposure and the use of unusual light sources ranging from the flash of the camera to the lamps of Venice. These are works that go beyond the photographic capturing of bodies and attempt to transcend the stillness of the image by rendering it more abstract and more painterly, in the process creating images that may offer the vision of a possible alternate world where the Goddesses of Zeus still reign, reincarnated in the bodies and the spirits of the women of Venice in 2025.
The photos for the exhibition are presented in custom-made Venetian frames crafted by the Di Pumpo Family. Each photograph will have its own unique frame, making each work an independent phenomenon of its own.
The notion of searching for The Three Graces is a radical act of affirmation, of capturing feminine beauty in a way defined by the act of being beautiful, the essence of the mythical Three Graces. The affirmation of beauty and the acknowledgement of its many facets, its many mysterious elements in all women is a radical act of love towards womanhood. In Search of the Three Graces is an attempt at transcending the banal and creating works of hidden and sublime beauty by capturing the spirit of women from a variety of backgrounds and ages, all of whom are women in my daily and social life. This is a most personal project, a way of honoring these women who honor me with their friendship and love.
